A UK space-research partnership has won millions to drive optics technologies forwards.
The Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Sira Electro-Optics, of the University College London, UK has teamed up with the Scotland-based Astronomy Technology Centre to develop "smart optics" technologies. The partners' £2.2 million "Faraday Partnership award," comes from the UK Department of Trade and Industry as well as government funded research councils.
Gordon Love, a lecturer in Physics at the University of Durham, UK believes that the latest cash injection will allow the optics industry to take advantage of exciting developments in fundamental research.
"New optical instruments are emerging with fields of application ranging from optical communications to medical imaging," said Love. "The Smart Optics Faraday Partnership will bring together experts from UK companies and universities to work on 'smart' ways of using [these] optics."
Other potential applications include next-generation telescopes, opthalmic instrumentation, semiconductor lithography and industrial-laser systems.
