US fiber maker Corning is to double the production of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers by establishing a second optical amplifier manufacturing facility.
The USD 50 million plant, in Benton Township, Pennsylvania, will employ around 1000 people and should be shipping its first products in July.
Analysts estimate that the optical networking market will continue to grow by more than 50% per annum over the next few years, increasing from USD 6 billion in 1999 to more than USD 23 billion by 2003.
