Sculpting waveforms of light via broadband waveform synthesis. Light waveforms, sculpted with attosecond accuracy, can be realized by coherently superimposing the spectral components of a coherent broadband source. Supercontinuum generation, based on the nonlinear interaction of laser pulses with matter, is a promising route to generating coherent light that spans many octaves. The team achieved this by sending a few-cycle laser pulse through a gas and using a process known-as self-channeling. (Image credit: E. Goulielmakis) |
