A reflective flat-panel display that exhibits color tuning across the entire visible spectrum could be a valuable power saver. Based on photonic crystals. University of Toronto, Opalux

Reflective flat-panel displays, which are based on photonic crystals, have been developed by researchers in Canada and the UK.

An applied voltage causes a structural change in the material that changes the reflected color.

Sample sizes on the order of 1 cm2 have been made, although films as large as a few hundred square centimeters can be produced.
