Modulated plates that focus light beyond its diffraction limit could herald benefits for near-field applications. Designed by Roberto Merlin at the University of Michigan, near-field plate.

A near-field plate, designed by researchers at the University of Michigan, can focus light well beyond its diffraction. The plate is able to focus radiation ranging from microwaves to the UV and could have applications in near-field data storage, non-contact sensing, imaging and nanolithography
