Color changing photonic crystals use magnetic fields University of California

Vials of iron oxide solution change color under an increasing magnetic field from left to right.

The color change emitted by the photonic crystals is determined by the spacing between the particles. This spacing can be conveniently changed by altering the strength of the magnetic field.
