Sony is ramping production of these GaN-based lasers for applications in its own Blu-ray Disc players and PlayStation3 consoles. The company's Shiroishi fab started operations in 1969, although the first infrared lasers for CD players were not manufactured until 1986. 15 years later, the company had surpassed fabrication of 1 billion lasers, and within the past few months it has reached the 2 billion mark.
