Igor Smolyanivov from the University of Maryland in the US has a slightly different magnifying superlens that confines all the light waves on a flat plane - although the metamaterial used in Xiang Zhang's superlens is also technically 2D. This photograph shows Smolyanivov using a business card to check the orientation of the laser beam, which must be carefully directed into the metamaterial. (Courtesy: Igor Smolyanivov) |
