Ring laser
A semiconductor ring laser can operate stably in either clockwise (dashed arrow) or CCW (solid arrow) directions. An external optical trigger pulse can switch the lasing direction (in this case from CW to CCW), resulting in a change of state at outputs Q and Q’. This bistable property provides the basis of an all-optical logic and memory device.
