Liquid lenses
A pair of pH-sensitive microlenses using two different pH-responsive hydrogels to monitor different areas in space. After changing the pH, the two lenses exhibit opposite changes in shape. Images from top to bottom correspond to time instants of 0, 13, 30, 56 seconds, respectively, after the buffer acidity has been changed. Left column: DMAEMA hydrogel-based lens, and right column: AA hydrogel-based lens. Each lens is 0.5mm across. (Image credit: Hongrui Jiang and Liang Dong)
