A macroscopic model shows how atoms can be trapped in a pyramid
To test whether it would be possible to trap atoms in such a concave pyramid, the researchers constructed a macroscopic glass model. The image shows this magneto-optical trap (MOT) holding a cloud of atoms at its centre - there are also two reflections of the cloud on either side. The entrance aperture of the pyramid has been superimposed as a solid line; the dotted lines highlight the edges. (Image: Applied Physics Letters)
