The sensor set-up
The Korean sensor design uses pump light from two laser diodes for two purposes. Firstly, to generate Raman amplification in the 50km length of SMF to overcome the loss of the fibre. Secondly, to a create a broadband signal from a piece of erbium-doped fiber in the sensor head. The signal reflects off the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) and is captured by an optical spectrum analyser.
