Making nanowires
(Limin Tong/Harvard University) To create the nanowires, a silica wire is wrapped around a sapphire taper (seen on the left) held over a flame, and as the wire reaches 1700°C it is drawn along the taper to create an ultrathin, super-smooth glass nanowire.
