ADC dumps optics business

02 Aug 2002

The telecommunications equipment maker calls time on its optical components operations.

ADC, the US-based telecommunications equipment manufacturer, is to exit the optical components business.

The action affects the company's complete line of passive and active components.

Optical products made by ADC include tunable lasers (1529-1561 nm), 980 nm pump lasers, dual-wavelength couplers and micro-optics components such as collimators.

"ADC will sell or close these product lines," said the company in a statement.

The move means that two ADC facilities in Minnesota, as well as the recently-completed tunable laser fabrication plant in Jarfalla, Sweden, and another plant in Canberra, Australia, will close.

ADC has already closed 41 of its facilities in the current fiscal year, and the company says that more closures are to come.

In late 2001, Denmark-based ADC subsidiary Ibsen Photonics completed a management buy-out from the parent company.
