Excimer order buoys Lambda-Physik

17 Jun 2002

The excimer laser manufacturer receives a EURO 4 million order for its deep-ultraviolet fluorine lasers.

A leading lithography systems manufacturer has placed a EURO 4 million order with Coherent subsidiary Lambda-Physik for its next-generation laser sources.

The order is for 157 nm fluorine excimer lasers, and is said by the Göttingen, Germany, based company to be one of the largest contracts yet awarded in this emerging market.

"There are signs of a distinct future growth potential for the application of this shortest wavelength of excimer lasers in lithography," added the company.

News of the order came after Lambda-Physik's latest financial results showed a 66 % decline in lithography sales from last year.

Europe and the US led the decline, with revenues from both areas down by over one-half. In the industrial sector, the company has seen a modest increase in sales, thanks to orders from flat-panel display manufacturers in Asia.

A decline in ophthalmology treatments has also hit the company, with its science/medical sector down by 33 %.

Overall, Lambda-Physik's revenues dropped 29 % on last year, but the company still managed to post a modest profit of EURO 0.5 million in the second quarter, thanks to cost-cutting measures implemented last year.

Bookings were also up 47 % on the previous quarter.
