Coherent Launches Verdi G8 – A Unique 8 Watt Green Laser

Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) has introduced the Verdi G8, the highest power, 532 nm, scientific-grade laser based on the company’s unique optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology. With 8 Watts of output, this laser provides a next-generation solution for pumping Titanium:Sapphire-based ultrafast laser oscillators in applications such as spectroscopy, pump-probe dynamics and materials research.

Like other Verdi G lasers, the new G8 delivers lower noise (<0.03% rms) than any competitive lasers based on diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) technology. While DPSS lasers multimode operation generates chaotic sum frequency noise, the short upper laser lifetime of OPSL devices totally eliminates so-called “green noise”. In addition, the thin OPSL chip (a few microns) prevents thermal lensing effects that are present in all DPSS lasers, which means that the output power of Verdi G can be adjusted over the entire dynamic range without affecting beam parameters.

The OPSL technology used in the Verdi G series has already been proven in over 25,000 OPSL units now in the field. This technology, combined with Coherent’s proprietary PermAlign™ manufacturing process has been widely recognized as the most reliable approach in generating visible laser light. In addition, Coherent leads the industry with pump diode reliability with a mean time to failure (MTTF) of over 50,000 hours for high-power pumps. The unprecedented reliability is backed by a 2 year/10,000 hours warranty, which means that the Verdi G series provides a lower overall cost of ownership than any competitive laser.
