German manufacturer already produces around 2000 of the thin-disk lasers each year.
Jena, 18.04.2011 - In April, Jenoptik received an order for diode-pumped green thin-disk lasers for medical use. The Lasers & Material Processing division will deliver the lasers, worth 3 million euros, to a prestigious German manufacturer this year as well as next.
Jenoptik has been mass-producing these lasers for medical technology applications, at a rate of approx. 2,000 units a year, at its Jena site since 1999. Over 13,000 of these lasers, which Jenoptik is constantly improving, are in use around the world.
Production of the diode-pumped green thin-disk lasers at the Jena site is certificated to meet the stringent requirements in the area of medical technology. As a result, Jenoptik is one of the few suppliers in the world which can mass-produce these complex lasers and laser systems in large batches with the high level of quality and process assurance required for medical use.
The green lasers emit laser light at 532 nanometers and are ideally suited for integration into laser therapy systems. In the area of medical technology lasers are applied in ophthalmology, dermatology, surgery and urology.
The market for medical lasers is expected to continue its growth. The Laser Focus World specialist magazine forecasts an increase in sales with medical lasers worldwide from 432 million USD in 2010 to 487 million USD in the current fiscal year. In addition to lasers, the Jenoptik Group also supplies optical modules and systems as well as digital microscope cameras for the medical technology market. Sales in this growth industry came to more than 30 million euros in 2010.
