PowerLight Technologies contracted by Zeno Power to developing power-beaming solutions for U.S. DoD

Date Announced: 19 Dec 2023

  • To power autonomous underwater vehicles, deep sea sensors.
  • Leverages PowerLight’s power over fiber technology to support distributed maritime sensing.

Kent, WA–PowerLight Technologies, the leading developer of safe, long-distance wireless power beaming solutions for kilowatt class power levels over kilometers of distance, today announced it is under contract with Zeno Power, a developer of commercial radioisotope power systems (RPS), to provide the DoD capabilities that could open the way for long-endurance seafloor sensor systems and charging stations for autonomous undersea vehicles.

The companies will provide a proof of concept and expect to demo the new technology by 2025, including a ruggedized power over fiber (PoF) system built by PowerLight that can distribute electricity deep underwater.

“This collaboration with Zeno Power is another incredibly strong validation of our power beaming solutions, and underscores our strategy from the beginning to develop multiple value propositions that meet a myriad of government, defense, and commercial needs," said Richard Gustafson, President and CEO of PowerLight.

RPS’s supply constant thermal energy that can be converted into electricity to provide reliable power in off-grid environments – from the surface of the Moon to the seabed. Zeno Power is combining a novel strontium-90 heat source with Stirling power conversion, that will be paired with power beaming over fiber (PoF) developed by PowerLight Technologies that is virtually undetectable underwater.

The companies will leverage Zeno’s Radioisotope Stirling micronuclear generator with power beaming over fiber (PoF) developed by PowerLight Technologies that is virtually undetectable underwater. Long-distance power beaming reliably distributes power to mobile networks, to broader digital infrastructure, and to the millions of IIoT, edge compute applications, and autonomous systems that will run on them.

PowerLight is now productizing and commercializing solutions for the global mobile telecoms.
