Deep UV LEDs for Industrial Curing Applications; Nikkiso Delivers High Intensity Line Source

Date Announced: 15 Sep 2015

“LED replacement of lamp technology is inevitable”

SAN DIEGO -- Nikkiso America has delivered a 265nm line source for industrial curing applications. With individual UVC LEDs operating at powers up to 30 mW, the source includes a 2D array that delivers cw power density greater than 125mW / cm2 and uniformity of ± 10%.

Dennis Martin, President & CEO of Nikkiso America, states, “UV LED technology is advancing rapidly, with extraordinary progress reported annually in optical output power, efficiency and cost. With the printing industry being a significant user of UV-based light sources, our technology offers compelling advantages over lamp-based solutions and further enables new applications.”

The devices, which are Mercury-free, offer a compact and rugged alternative to lamps, consistent power over time, wavelength control, faster start-up times and long operating lifetimes. “LED replacement of lamp technology is inevitable,” according to Mr. Martin, “and is therefore a very important consideration for system designers and their product roadmaps.” The devices are particularly well suited for applications in industrial curing and printing, water purification and sterilization, and life science instrumentation.

The company’s proprietary AlGaN semiconductor technology was developed by 2014 Nobel Prize winning Professors Akasaki and Amano and enables the world’s highest performance and efficiency in the UV-B and UV-C portions of the spectrum. Production facilities are located in Japan’s Ishikawa Prefecture and include epitaxy, wafer fab and packaging, with a monthly capacity in excess of 30,000 units.
