Five years and counting: Mars Curiosity
Five years and counting: the Mars Curiosity rover landed on the red planet August 5, 2017, and thanks in part to its autonomous navigational skills is still roaming the rough landscape around Mount Sharp. Aside from cameras, the vehicle carries plenty of optics and photonics equipment - including the "ChemCam" spectrograph that uses a laser to vaporize the surface of Martian rocks so that their elemental composition can be analyzed.
