Kaleido Technology stepping up its ultra-precision offerings

12 Oct 2007

In order to meet increasing market demands, Kaleido Technology is expanding its ultra-precision machining capabilities by adding another system from Moore Nanotechnology Systems to be ready for production in January ’08.

"Thanks to a growing awareness of our unique capabilities for ultra-precision diamond-machining of complex parts, we have seen a surge in demand throughout the year, and we are responding to that by adding another ultra-precision machine center from Moore", says Palle Geltzer Dinesen, Chief Sales Officer and co-founder of Kaleido Technology. Using its unique and proprietary process-chain for analysis, part-programming, tool-shape compensation and machining for free-form lenses and mirrors, Kaleido Technology is able to offer free-form prototyping with shortest lead-time down to 4 weeks. The company is able to produce free-form mirrors (up to 600 mm diameter) with form accuracies down to below 1 µm (PV), with a surface roughness of less than 5 nm rms and a slope accuracy of better than 70 µrad. These capabilities have come about through the customisation of an ultra-precision machining centre with sensors to track its long-term temperature stability. With this information, and with in-house developed machine control software to directly control hardware features, the enhanced system can generate extremely smooth surfaces and complex geometries. Using their ultra-precision machining centre, Kaleido Technology is able to take a CAD file directly from a customer to produce prototype and production quantity free-form mirrors to the high degree of accuracy and surface finish. First-mover customers in the automotive industry are already taking advantage of Kaleido Technology’s rapid prototyping capabilities for true free-form head-up display mirrors that require high accuracy and smoothness for undistorted imaging onto the windscreen. More details about this can be found on the company’s new Applications page along with customer references. Rear-projection monitors is another rapidly evolving field where free-form prototyping is key to development towards more compact and very competitive systems. About Kaleido Technology Kaleido Technology is a leading European manufacturer of OEM discrete and integrated optical components and sub-systems. Today the company delivers highly complex diamond-machined components to customers world-wide, and for tomorrow’s needs Kaleido Technology offers extremely cost-effective wafer-based glass molding technology for aspheric optics for consumer applications.
