Laser systems company sells welding product line

17 Jun 2002

GSI Lumonics focuses on semiconductors while Prima invests in the US.

GSI Lumonics in the US is to sell its Laserdyne product line and associated business to Prima US, a unit of Prima Industrie of Torino, Italy. The transaction is expected to close at the end of the current quarter. Prima will acquire certain operating assets plus USD 2 million.

The Laserdyne product line consists of fully integrated, multiaxis, laser processing systems for cutting, drilling and welding flat (two-dimensional) and three-dimensional parts in aerospace, automotive and other industrial markets. Charles Winston, president and CEO of GSI Lumonics said: "Prima is investing to increase its presence in the North American market, while GSI Lumonics is strategically focusing its resources toward high-performance, high-precision, high-value laser systems for semiconductor and electronics applications."

Prima Industrie designs, manufactures and sells software-controlled, high-power precision laser systems for the cutting, welding and surface treatment of two-dimensional and three-dimensional metallic and non-metallic parts. GSI Lumonics supplies laser-based automated advanced manufacturing systems, components and services to semiconductor, electronics and industrial markets and, through it newly formed subsidiary, WavePrecision Inc, provides precision optics for telecommunications networks.
