LED efficiency doubled by UK researchers

17 Jun 2002

In a recently published work on OLEDs (Appl. Phys. Lett. 77, 3340 (2000)) researchers at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of St. Andrews, U.K have demonstrated that the outcoupling efficiency of an LED may be more than doubled by forming the polymer film into a Bragg grating structure with no measurable detrimental effect on device operation.

John Lupton of the Light Emitting Polymers Group suggests "this is not only a significant demonstration of the electrical driving of a (1-D) photonic structure, but also that the external efficiency of conventional OLED structures may be significantly improved above the current maximum of approx. 10 %."
