Corvis buys Algety Telecom

17 Jun 2002

Algety Telecom, the soliton-based optical telecom start-up, of Lannion, France will be bought by the US-based all-optical Internet company Corvis Corporation, of Columbia.

Algety's soliton-based, dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission systems enable 40 Gbps, as well as 10 Gbps, transmission to be sent over long distances in a purely optical form. The company holds the current record for a terrestrial soliton transmission of 1 Tbit/s over a distance of 1000km.

The Algety acquisition, for an undisclosed number of shares, will enhance Corvis' ability to offer fast all-optical networks. It will also provide the US company with a greater presence in Europe.

Algety was founded in 1999 by researchers from France Telecom (See New company will provide soliton based telecommunications) and now has 100 employees. Upon completion of the acquisition, it will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Corvis Corporation but will continue to operate from its existing base in Lannion, France.
