The consumer giant begins mass producing its 3.8 inch color OLED display for handheld applications.
This month Sony will begin mass producing full color organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays for mobile devices. The Japanese electronics giant plans to use the 3.8 inch 480 x 320 pixel screen to deliver high-quality content such as TV programs and digital still images on the move.
"The OLED display is self-luminous and does not require a backlight. It offers a high contrast ratio, a quick response time and wide viewing angle - all in a package slimmer than current LCD modules," said Sony. "To enhance this display, Sony has employed its Super Top Emission technology for outstanding brightness and greater color gamut. These translate into image quality and clarity that could be previously viewed only on cathode ray tube displays."
The super top structure sandwiches organic material between an anode and a semi-transparent cathode to create a cavity. Sony says it has optimized the thickness of the organic layer for each of the RGB color components. The cavity uses multiple reflections to channel light emission to the screen's surface.
The RGB display is 2.14 mm thick and is said to have a response time of 0.01 milliseconds and a brightness of 150 cd/m2. It will make its debut in the firm's CLIE PEG-VZ90 handheld device.
