Nichia introduces UV diode laser

03 Oct 2002

Nichia announces that it is to begin sampling a 375 nm UV laser diode.

Nichia is to begin sampling an ultraviolet laser diode. The Japanese company appears to be the first to produce such devices commercially.

According to Nichia, which also won the race to commercialize blue and violet laser diodes, the ultraviolet laser has an output power of 2 mW at 375 nm.

Its typical threshold current is 45 mA, with an operating voltage of 4.5 V.

Potential applications of the devices include spectroscopy, material processing and further increases in the capacities of optical data storage media.

Reaching further into the ultraviolet spectrum, Nichia has also announced that it will begin sampling a 365 nm LED early next year. This device has an output power of 100 mW and a drive current of 500 mA at 4.6 V. The LED is expected to find applications in medical equipment, analytical systems and in photocatalysis.
