Rohm will begin selling blue light-emitting diodes next month, according to reports in Japan's business newspaper Nikkei. The company is said to be aiming for initial monthly sales of JPY 10 million and working towards releasing a blue diode laser in the near future.

Coastal Optical Systems, US. Founded in 1991 and based in Florida, Coastal makes custom-precision optical assemblies for markets such as machine vision and telecommunications and has seen its annual revenue grow by an average of 24% over the past 5 years.
Israel-based medical-laser manufacturer
Lumenis has posted a first quarter net loss of USD 643 000 compared with a net income of USD 4.2 million for the same period last year. Lumenis chief executive officer Yacha Sutton said: "We expect the revenue shortfall to persist through this year. We are implementing a company-wide cost reduction program and expect sales growth to resume next year."
StockerYale, US, a provider of specialty fiber and optical components, has acquired CIENA's specialty optical fiber (SOF) group for an undisclosed amount of cash and stock. The companies have signed a three-year supply agreement for fiber and shipments are expected to begin in the fourth quarter.
Limo, the Germany-based manufacturer of micro-optics and diode-laser systems, has opened a new production facility in Dortmund. Containing two new cleanrooms, the new facility will increase production capacity four-fold and double LIMO's already 100-strong workforce.
