General company news
• OmniVision Technologies of the US says it is now supplying its CMOS CameraChip technology to an automotive equipment supplier for use in lane departure warning systems. This is the second automotive application that the company has secured orders for. It is already supplying CMOS sensors for use in rearview cameras.
• UDC of the US and Nippon Steel Chemical of Japan are working together to develop vacuum-deposited red phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) materials. Combining UDC's red PHOLED with Nippon Steel's host material is said to reduce the overall power consumption of a display by more than 40% compared with fluorescent red OLEDs.
• OLED-T of the UK has raised $7 million in venture capital funding. The company was formed from the assets of ELAM-T and will use the cash to fund a new R&D facility in the UK. OLED-T develops and licenses high efficiency, long lifetime materials known as ELAMATES for OLED displays.
• AIXTRON of Germany has received a follow-on order for two GaN MOCVD mass systems from Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO). The systems will ship to SEMCO's South Korean facility in Kyungki-Do during the first half of 2006 and will be used for volume production of high brightness blue and white GaN-based LEDs.
• Cascade Technologies, the UK-based developer of quantum cascade laser-based systems, is moving to a new facility in Stirling Innovation Park. The facility is said to have over 6000 sq. ft. of office and manufacturing space, essential for the company's growth.
• JDSU has announced that its 16-bit optically-powered data link (OPDL-16) subsystem has successfully passed government testing in China. The OPDL is based on JDSU's power-over-fiber technology being developed by its Photonic Power division and will be used as part of an all-fiber, digitally-based electrical current measurement system.
Acquisitions
• Zarlink Semiconductor has purchased the optical I/O business of Primarion for $7 million in cash. Primarion develops laser driver and optical receiver ICs used in multi-lane, parallel fiber optic modules. Zarlink intends to retain all 10 Primarion employees and expects the acquisition to generate around $3 million in revenue in fiscal 2007.
• Thin-film coating and filter expert Barr Associates is acquiring the assets of fellow US firm Optical Coating Corporation (OCC). Barr says that the acquisition enhances its capability and capacity to produce products in the infrared wavelength region. When the acquisition is complete, Barr will have over 70 active coating deposition systems.
Patents
• Nichia of Japan has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against MOELLER of Germany and its Japanese subsidiary in the Osaka District Court. Nichia alleges that a blue LED (M22-LED-B) sold by MOELLER infringes three patents held by Nichia. The suit seeks damages for past infringement and an injunction against any further infringing activity.
