General company news:
• DALSA has announced plans to acquire fellow Canadian firm Coreco for C$72 million. The deal combines Coreco's vision processing and software expertise with DALSA's CCD and CMOS image sensor technology. "I am excited about the opportunity for the 'new DALSA' to take a leadership role in the convergence of technologies that is rapidly occurring in our industry," said DALSA's CEO Savvas Chamberlain.
• Berliner Glas is acquiring a majority share of fellow German firm Prinz Optics in a deal that becomes effective as of July 1, 2005. Berliner says that Prinz will continue to operate under the same name and at the same location in Stromberg, Germany. Prinz Optics specialises in optical coatings produced using the sol-gel immersion method.
• PerkinElmer, US, has acquired Elcos of Germany, a maker of custom LED products for biomedical and industrial applications, for an undisclosed sum. Elcos generated a revenue of $11.3 million in 2004, with over 60% of this total coming from health science applications such as blood glucose monitoring.
• BinOptics, US, has raised $10 million in series B funding. The round was led by new investors. The company will use the cash to scale-up production of its integrated microphotonic chips. All of BinOptics' products are made using its etched facet technology which integrates multiple functions on to a single chip.
• US-based Konarka Technologies has teamed up with Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland to develop a photovoltaic fabric. The collaboration is expected to yield the first fully integrated woven photovoltaic material. Konarka says this could lead to products such as wearable power generation for mobile electronics.
• Toptica Photonics of Germany, a maker of diode laser systems, is moving to a new facility in Munich as of February 21, 2005. The firm says continuous growth in product development, sales and staff headcount has prompted the move. The new facility boasts 2500 square meters of space.
• Photonic Products of the UK is moving its headquarters to a new 1242 square meter building. Launched in 2005, the company has seen its turnover increase by 226% and its workforce treble since 2001.
Distribution:
• CryLas of Germany, a maker of passively Q-switched DPSS lasers, has appointed Market Tech as its exclusive distributor in North America. Market Tech will distribute all of Crylas' laser products.
Events:
• The Society for Information Display (SID) is extending its 2005 technical symposium from a three-day to a four-day event. The symposium will take place between May 24 - 27 as part of SID's annual meeting and exhibition. The event organisers decided to add the extra day after seeing a 35% attendance jump compared with 2004 figures.
