Financial news:

•  Rofin-Sinar has reported net sales of $322.6 million for fiscal 2004, up 25% year-on-year. Net sales of macro laser products increased 16% to $158.8 million while net sales of lasers for marking and micro applications were up 35% to $163.8 million. Sales in North America and Europe/Asia rose 33% and 23% respectively. Net income for the twelve month period more than doubled to $32.4 million while gross profit was up $35.9 million to $132.2 million compared to figures for the previous fiscal year.

•  Sales at Jenoptik's photonics division rose to EURO255.1 million for the first nine months of 2004 compared with EURO194 million for the same period in 2003. Jenoptik now expects the division's annual sales to exceed EURO350 million. Orders for the period increased 29.3% to EURO311.4 million compared with EURO240.9 million for the first nine months of 2003.

•  Quantel of France has posted sales of EURO24.8 million for the first nine months of 2004 compared with EURO22.7 million for the same period in 2003. The company says it will deliver the first orders for its BRIO product line in December. It will also introduce new lasers for medical applications such as photocoagulation at the beginning of next year.

General company news:

•  Vertilas' long wavelength laser diodes are now listed in Thorlabs' catalog. "We have been able to expand our offerings of laser diodes in the wavelength range up to 2050 nm," said Sebastian Krollmann of Thorlabs. "It also offers us the opportunity to enter new application areas and open up new customer groups."

•  Nichia and Sony say they have co-developed a dual wavelength laser coupler which will go into mass production by the end of 2005. The device contains two laser diodes: one emitting at 660 nm for DVD playback and the second at 405 nm for blue-violet optical disc playback.

•  nLight of the US says it has developed a single 1 cm diode laser bar emitting 364W of continuous wave light at 808 nm.

•  Alfalight is claiming a world record for power conversion efficiency with its latest 976 nm diode laser bars. The US firm says it has demonstrated a 50W, 976 nm bar with 71% efficiency at 25 deg C and 73% at 10 deg C.
