29 Oct 2004

Including news from Alfalight, Sensors Unlimited, Showa Denko and Osram Opto Semiconductors.

General company news:

•  Fairlight, a maker of digital audio equipment, has selected Osram Opto Semiconductors' OLED screen technology for use in its products. Osram's 96x64 pixel Pictiva OLED display will make its debut in Fairlight's Constellation-XT professional audio mixing system. According to Osram, this is the first time OLEDs have been used in the high-end audio market.

•  eMagin, a US maker of active matrix OLED microdisplays, has unveiled a 11.52 million pixel OLED display at the 2004 AUSA meeting being held this week in Washington, US. The full-color display, which eMagin says is the world's highest resolution OLED, comprises two UXGA (1600x3x2400 pixels) displays.

•  Showa Denko of Japan claims to have developed a 12 mW blue LED. Based on a flip-chip structure, sample shipments of the GaN-based LED chips will be available in November. The firm is also building a plant in Chiba to produce 30 million units a month where commercial production is expected to start next year.

•  Elforlight of the UK, a developer of diode-pumped solid-state lasers, has moved to a new 340 square meter facility based in Daventry, England. The firm says that two-thirds of the new building contains purpose-built clean rooms for optical and electronic assembly and testing laser systems. The move triples Elforlight's production capacity.

Contracts:

•  Alfalight, a US maker of high-power diode lasers, has received a $3.8 million, 18 month R&D contract from the US Air Force Research Laboratory. The firm will now develop a high-power multimode diode laser whose output wavelength remains stable with varying temperatures and drive currents. Alfalight will initially focus on 976 nm devices, which are used to pump ytterbium-doped fiber lasers.

•  Sensors Unlimited, US, has won a $750 000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract from the US Department of Defense. The funds will be used to develop a camera that simultaneously images in the visible and short-wave infrared but also doubles as a communication device. The three objectives set out in the contract are to improve sensitivity in the visible waveband, enable the camera to function as a 1 GHz communication link and reduce the camera's pixel pitch to 15 µm.

•  The University of Central Florida (UCF), US, has received a $1.5 million grant from the US Economic Development Administration. UCF will use the award to build 24 new laboratories on the campus that houses both the College of Optics and Photonics and the Florida Photonics Center of Excellence. UCF says the grant will help create 265 jobs and generate up to $47 million in investment from businesses.
