• Polytec PI, a US maker of nanopositioning equipment, has established an annual $25 000 award for US and Canadian researchers. The NanoInnovation Grant, which comes in the form of equipment, is open to graduate students and post-doctoral scientists performing optics, nanotechnology and biotechnology-related research. The deadline for submitting applications is 31 December 2003.
• Avanex, a maker of photonic subsystems used in optical networks, is acquiring the optical systems division of fellow US firm Vitesse Semiconductor for $6million in stock. Under the terms of the agreement, Avanex will also spend up to $2million on Vitesse products over the next three years.
• Zygo, the US maker of high-precision optics, has won a $6million contract to produce high-quality optics for use in next-generation semiconductor equipment. The contract will run from 2004 through to April 2006.
Zygo has also received an order from Northrop Grumman to supply custom sapphire windows for advanced infrared target acquisition systems. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
Zygo’s net sales for its fiscal year ended 30 June increased by 28% to $102.6million. Net loss for the year fell to $10.6 million, compared with $11.7 million for the previous fiscal year.
• FLIR Systems, the developer of infrared imaging systems, has received a $6.2 million order for its MARFLIR thermal imaging systems from the US Navy. Deliveries will begin in the fourth quarter of 2003.
• MEMSCAP, the French fabricator of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has acquired GalayOr, an Israeli start-up that is developing all-silicon integrated components for telecommunications. The two firms have been working together to develop a series of variable optical attenuators.
• GSI Lumonics has named Industrial Laser Systems (ILS) as the exclusive distributor of its laser products in France and the French-speaking regions of Switzerland and Belgium. ILS is based in Paris, France.
