• Lambda-Physik, the German maker of ultraviolet laser systems, has withdrawn its sales forecast of EURO 100 million for fiscal 2003. Lambda says that its earnings have been hit by the impact of SARS on the Asian market and continued weakness of the semiconductor industry. It says that it is unable to give a new financial forecast at this time.
• EXFO Electro-Optic Engineering, the Canadian maker of fiber-optic test and measurement equipment, is chopping 30% of its staff as part of a restructuring program that will save the firm USD 10 million a year. The company says that in order to adjust its cost structure to current market realities, it is reducing its workforce, rationalizing its business activities and consolidating some of its manufacturing operations.
• BeamExpress of Switzerland has closed its series B financing round on USD 7.5 million. The maker of 1550-nm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), which are used in optical networks, will use the cash to develop its technology and bring products to the market.
• Thorlabs, US, has acquired Tektronix Munich, a subsidiary of Tektronix for an undisclosed sum. The new company, Thorlabs GmbH, will remain in the Munich area of Germany and will become Thorlabs’ central hub in Europe.
• Sensors Unlimited, a US developer of indium-gallium-arsenide-based technology, has won a six-month contract to build a combined imaging and range-finding camera for the US Air Force. If the contract is extended, it will be worth USD 3.7 million to Sensors Unlimited and will see the company deliver two advanced cameras over 33 months.
