• Five major Japanese companies have formed a consortium to promote the growth and commercialization of 3D display-related products and applications. In addition to Itochu, NTT DATA, Sanyo Electric, Sharp and Sony, the consortium also includes a number of hardware manufacturers, software vendors and academic organizations.
• Canadian materials processing specialist GSI Lumonics has announced a USD 88.8 million decline in annual sales. Revenue for 2002 was USD 159.1 million compared with USD 247.9 million for the previous year. The company also recorded a net loss for the year of USD 27.7 million, almost double the 2001 figure of USD 14.7 million.
• Zygo, US, has received a contract worth up to USD 8.6 million to supply Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory with 94 precision opto-mechanical assemblies. The assemblies will be installed in the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which is being built to study nuclear fusion. This is the second LLNL/NIF contract the company has won this year. In January, it was awarded a contract with a potential value of USD 7.66 million to supply 192 vacuum relay telescopes.
• Toyoda Gosei of Japan will increase its monthly production capacity of LEDs to 150 million units by September 2003, according to a report in the Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai. The company also plans to setup a sales office in China to cope with the increased demand for LEDs backlights in mobile phones.
• Zia Laser, US, has been awarded USD 5.4 million in Series B venture capitalist funding to continue commercializing of its quantum dot laser technology. The company, which has already started sampling small quantities of its 1310 nm and 1550 nm technology, says the cash will enable it to launch devices on to the market.
