Three-Five rushes Zight technology to market

01 Aug 2002

LCD and microdisplay manufacturer Three-Five Systems has wasted no time in introducing a product based on the liquid-crystal-on-silicon technology it acquired from Zight Corporation when the latter wound up earlier this year.

Three-Five has launched the Brillian Z86D-3 SVGA microdisplay, which the company says is it most advanced near-to-eye product so far.

Said Rainer Kuhn, director of sales and marketing: "The fact that the D-3 display utilizes off-the-shelf materials and processes enabled us to integrate this product into our manufacturing operation at a very rapid pace."

The device has a pixel fill factor of 93%, which produces smooth images at a magnification as high as 150x. A high frame rate of 120 Hz or 360 Hz RGB colors eliminates color break up and flicker associated with field sequential displays. Three-Five is claiming 1 million hours mean time to failure.

Applications will include night-vision systems, wearable computing, video telescopes, microscopes, endoscopic surgery and gaming.
