Fig 4: A CW OPO has been used by a team at Rice University to demonstrate ultrasensitive trace gas detection using a novel tuning-fork photoacoustic sensor (left). The recorded spectrum shows absorption features for ammonia and water vapour. The researchers have since gone on to detect ethane at parts-per-billion levels using the same photoacoustic method and a CW OPO emitting 300 mW at a wavelength of 3 µm.
