Photron Introduces Ultra High Speed, High Spatial Resolution Camera - Fastcam IS-1M

01 Feb 2012

Photron, Inc., a leading, global manufacturer of high speed imaging systems and image analysis software, introduces the ultra-high-speed, high-resolution camera system, the Fastcam IS-1M. The revolutionary 312 x 260 pixel resolution ISIS (in-situ image storage) CCD sensor system is designed to capture a wide range of ultra high-speed phenomena at up to 1,000,000 frames per second (fps). The key feature of the new camera is the sensor where the signal storage areas for the recorded images are incorporated within the chip. Extremely light sensitive, the Fastcam IS-1M captures a wide range of high speed events, even in low light conditions. When using two or more cameras, the 10-bit monochrome Fastcam IS-1M high speed camera system allows synchronous recording which supports phenomenological analysis from a variety of angles.

The camera’s critical 100-frames buffer and flexible triggering, along with the ultra-high speed and high spatial resolution, revolutionize high speed recording, according to Photron’s director of sales and marketing, Andrew Bridges. He notes, “Most high speed cameras can only provide tiny resolutions in the order of 32 pixels squared around one million frame per second, so the FASTCAM IS-1M's 312 (wide) by 260 (high) resolution at one million frames per second (fps) is a truly usable area.”

The new camera is recommended for applications such as inkjet printing/droplet measurements and other fluid dynamics, hypervelocity impact observation and testing, materials failure, electric discharge, combustion evaluation, product fault-finding, and sports science. For added flexibility, the camera features a Nikon F-mount lens. The imaging system includes intuitive camera control and image download software via the high speed USB 2.0 interface. Recorded images can be saved as an AVI video or as JPEG, TIFF or AVI image sequences.
