Alfalight™ 30W 808 nm Laser Modules with Wavelength Stabilization Technology Enable Reliable Air-Cooled Diode Pumped Solid State Lasers

28 Jan 2008

Third-Generation Combined Power Modules (CPM III) Use Single Emitter Diodes to Deliver Over 20,000 Hours MTTF Operation

New from Alfalight Inc is the AC3-808B and AC3-808BW series of high-brightness 30 W 808 nm fiber laser pump sources based on high-reliability single-emitter (SE) laser diodes. The new third-generation combined power modules (CPM III) provide over 20,000 hours MTTF and do not suffer the catastrophic failure mode inherent in conventional bar-based emitters. Compact CPM III modules include a thermistor for temperature monitoring and are available in both standard BAL (808±3 nm) and integrated Wavelength Stabilization Technology (WST) (808±1.5 nm) versions. Alfalight’s proven, proprietary technology for wavelength stabilization minimizes wavelength shift over temperature, enabling air-cooled operation. Target markets include industrial end-pumped DPSS lasers for Nd:YAG or Nd:YVO4 systems for end uses such as material cutting and processing, light welding, marking and printing. "The CPM III leverages the stabilized performance of Alfalight's 808 nm WST single emitter pump diodes to produce 30 W of light output with greatly extended reliability," said Ron Bechtold, vice president of sales and marketing at Alfalight. "We expect that a range of customers will be able to take immediate advantage of these new modules as a cost-competitive upgrade to existing fiber-coupled bar based DPSS laser systems or to move to new lower cost air-cooled designs." The Alfalight CPM III series modules combine seven single-emitter diodes to provide 30 W of 808 nm fiber-coupled light output. Use of a 685 µm fiber bundle with 0.15 NA gives higher brightness and easy incorporation into an existing fiber-coupled bar based 0.22 NA systems. Alfalight's proprietary WST devices integrate a holographically-defined semiconductor grating at the wafer level to provide a "stable lock window" wherein the wavelength drift is controlled to 0.07nm/°C. The lock window is typically 30°-40° C wide and spans the operating power range of the device. Due to the highly optimized monolithic design, the efficiency and reliability are on par with non-stabilized devices without the added cost or complexity of external-grating approaches. The new Alfalight CPM III 808 nm 30 W modules are available in a 3.35" x 2.73" x 0.67" light weight aluminum case. A 1 m armored cable with SMA905 optical output connector is attached to the module. Engineering samples are available now from Pacer International and production volumes will ship in March of 2008. Pricing is available on request. Part numbers are AC3-808B-68-303 for the 30 W 808±3 nm Standard Module and AC3-808BW-68-301 for the 30 W 808±1.5 nm WST Module
