Open-source optical coating design application reaches 1.8.0, adds ellipsometry fitting
Free, MIT-licensed desktop application covers design, synthesis, monitoring simulation and tolerancing for optical
22 September 2026 Coatings and Thin Films
TFStudio, an open-source application for designing and analysing optical thin-film coatings, released version 1.8.0 on 15 September under the MIT licence. It runs on Windows and Linux, and a demo runs in the browser at tfstudio.xyz/demo.
The program covers the workflow a coating engineer runs in commercial tools: a transfer-matrix engine for absorbing and dispersive layers at oblique incidence, local refinement, needle, gradual-evolution and structural synthesis, deposition monitoring simulation, Monte-Carlo tolerancing, and refractive-index characterisation from measured spectra. It reads and writes Zemax OpticStudio coating files, imports Essential Macleod designs and OptiLayer material libraries, and includes a browser for the refractiveindex.info database.
Version 1.8.0 adds fitting of layer thicknesses to measured ellipsometric ? and ?, electric-field profiles in V/m for laser-damage assessment, and a rebuilt filter-design wizard that designs at the intended angle of incidence rather than at normal incidence.
The previous open-source coating design application, OpenFilters, had its last release in 2017. TFStudio's calculation engine is published separately as the tmmcore package in JavaScript, C and WebAssembly, and its agreement with an independently written transfer-matrix implementation can be checked in two commands.
