OQmented announces collaboration with optical manufacturing expert Jabil

Date Announced: 27 Jun 2024

The company successfully tested the design for high volume manufacturing of their Augmented Reality light engines with ams OSRAM laser diodes.

Itzehoe, Germany, June 27, 2024 – OQmented has realized a design for large-scale assembly of their fully integrated projection display systems, co-developed with Jabil, a trusted engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain partner for the world's top brands. The laser diodes for these light engines are provided by ams OSRAM, a global leader in intelligent sensors and emitters.

OQmented has just recently been listed as one of the tech innovators in the head mounted display market by research and consulting firm Gartner[1]. The startup enables tech companies and eyeglass manufacturers to build lightweight all-day wearable Augmented or Mixed Reality (AR/MR) glasses, suitable for outdoor use. Their ultra-compact MEMS[2]-based light engines utilize laser beam scanning (LBS) technology which offers several advantages over competing approaches, e.g., higher brightness and contrast, smaller system size or lower power consumption.

The cooperation with Jabil supports OQmented’s objective to become the key enabler for consumer Augmented Reality glasses. For mass production of its light engines, the startup provides its vacuum-sealed MEMS mirrors, optimized for AR applications, including electronics, software and the incorporated ams OSRAM laser diodes. Jabil is responsible for the assembly of the optics with carriers in an active alignment process. This procedure is based on their manufacturing expertise and OQmented’s unique IP and know-how in LBS-based micro-display design.

“We are excited to partner with two global industry leaders and that we, as a hardware startup, managed to reach this important milestone for mass production,” said Dr. Ulrich Hofmann, co-CEO and co-founder of OQmented. “This successful demonstration for the mass production and assembly of our product marks a breakthrough for offering our fully integrated light engines as Plug and Play solutions to the manufacturers of AR/MR glasses. There is a growing demand for our product and we benefit from the development towards wearable AI[3] devices.”

“We are proud being part of this great story and collaborating with such an innovative company. Our optics expertise helps driving OQmented’s success,” said Joseph Bradley, Sr. Business Unit Director Optics at Jabil.
