Newport Spectra-Physics® Granted Key Patent for Multiphoton Imaging

Date Announced: 19 Sep 2011

• Patent for DeepSee™ technology enables automated deep tissue imaging

Spectra-Physics®, a division of Newport Corporation, announces the issuance of U.S. patent 7,962,046 for its DeepSee technology for multiphoton imaging. Used in both the industry-leading Mai Tai® DeepSee and the recently announced InSight™ DeepSee products, the pioneering technology enables automated, deep 3-D imaging of live tissue in neuroscience, cell biology, and other advanced biological applications. The new patent expands the company’s portfolio of fundamental patents covering ultrafast laser technologies.

“This enabling patent for the DeepSee technology is a key addition to our intellectual property portfolio,” said Dave Allen, general manager and vice president for Spectra-Physics. “This technology has established itself as the industry standard for deep tissue imaging, a fundamental tool in advanced biological applications.”

The DeepSee technology is widely used in multiphoton imaging for automated pre-compensation of ultrafast laser pulses for optical dispersion in microscopes, thereby delivering the shortest possible pulses and highest peak power to the sample. This results in significantly enhanced image quality and deeper imaging penetration into tissue in vivo.

Spectra-Physics is a market leader in ultrafast and industrial lasers. The company has a portfolio of over 150 patents and patents pending in laser technologies. Established 50 years ago as the first commercial laser company, Spectra-Physics has led the industry in pioneering many new laser technologies, products and solutions.
