The ICESat-2 payload features a single laser altimeter instrument that will direct three pairs of green (532nm) beams towards Earth. Designed with a much higher pulse energy and repetition rate than previous missions, it will be able to measure changes in ice elevation of just 4mm, at intervals of less than a meter. The data should prove invaluable for topography and climate studies. Image: NASA Goddard. |
