Klebsiella pneumoniae: this baterium, found normally in the human body, can become destructive to the lungs in patients with weakened immune systems. Drug-resistant strains are becoming increasingly widespread - and early detection of such strains is seen as critical for treating patients. The MALDI-TOF method can detect its presence by identifying the effect of the bacterium on antibiotics used to treat infections. Credit: Bioquell. |
