The German company Heliatek is one of the leading developers of organic photovoltaics (OPV) technology, and jointly holds the world record for OPV cell efficiency, at 8.3%, with US-based Konarka. But Lux Research analysts believe that repeating this kind of "hero" performance on a highly repeatable, high-yielding and low-cost manufacturing scale will present a major challenge - and that even if it is possible, the cost profile of OPV will remain too high to compete with conventional silicon and inorganic thin-film approaches.
