| Sending back the first close-up, high-definition views of the planet Mercury, Messenger is the first spacecraft to visit the planet in nearly 40 years since the Mariner 10 probe made a fly-by visit in 1974-5. It is the first to snap the Sun's nearest planet from orbit, and is just starting a year-long study.
