HCF production: Lumenisity's HCF improves on earlier versions of the technology with much lower nonlinearity and ultra-low latency. Data travels 50% faster in a hollowcore cable, reducing latency by 33%, and the time required for a round trip by three microseconds per kilometer. Lumenisity says that although tiny, these latency savings can be hugely significant in financial trading applications. The effect also means that data centers can be located further apart from each other, while HCF also looks useful for increasing the reach of quantum-encrypted links. Image: Microsoft/Lumenisity. |
