SPIE names 99 new Senior Members

27 Jul 2021

Honor recognizes scientific excellence and achievements, and involvement in the optics community.

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics (and publisher of optics.org), has welcomed 99 new Senior Members from 24 countries, across academia, government, and industry, working across a variety of disciplines that range from nanophotonics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, solar energy, and translational medicine, to defense, food security, and lithography.

This year's cohort includes Alberto Sposito, a research and development specialist at Fizoptika and the first SPIE Senior Member based in Malta; Brian Primeau, a principal optical engineer at Ball Aerospace; Anne-Sophie Poulin-Girard, a research associate at Laval University’s Optical Engineering Research Laboratory; and the University of Auckland associate professor Frédérique Vanholsbeeck.

“SPIE Senior Members are Members honored for their scientific excellence across the broad spectrum of optics and photonics research and applications, their active involvement with the optics community and SPIE, and significant performance that distinguishes them from their peers," said the 2021 Senior Member Subcommittee Chair and US Army Research Laboratory Essential Research Program Manager Dimitra Stratis-Cullum.

“This promotion honors their contributions not only across the international ecosystem, but also across the full spectrum of optics and photonics professionals in academia, industry, and government.”

The SPIE Senior Member recognition program began in 2008 as a way to recognize active Members earlier in their careers and from a broader constituency. Nominations for the 2022 cohort of SPIE Senior Members will be accepted through 15 March 2022; nomination support materials will be accepted until 1 April 2022.
