The HDMI 2.1 iteration will support data rates of up to 48 Gb/s, enough to support an 8K resolution display operating at a refresh rate of 120 frames per second. That bandwidth does not necessarily require an optical link, but copper connections become less effective as they get longer - and these longer cables are likely to be where optical technology can find a niche.
