In the mid 1980's, B.E. Meyers & Company pioneered the application of infrared lasers as illuminators for use with night vision devices. These devices, known as the OWLσ" and DARK INVADERσ" have been shipped worldwide for military surveillance operations. Having earned a supplier reputation of delivering high performance solutions to these end-user requirements, the company was then challenged to develop high-energy laser pointer devices to be used for directing aircraft to ordnance placement. The resulting devices became de facto standards with U.S. Navy Seals and other users to the degree that as technology evolved, so did the generation of this product. Thus, the renowned IZLID-II (Infrared Zoom Laser Illuminator Designator) set the stage for a series of increasingly effective and successful laser-based products. Since the introduction of IZLID product, laser illuminators and designators have evolved to diode and microchip assembly (MCA) laser devices that cover the green through infrared, and range in power from 100 mW to 4 W. Today, these battery-powered laser illuminator and designator systems are used primarily with small arms, crew-served weapons, as well as environmentally unfriendly land, sea & aerial vehicles. These products have all been designed to be in rugged aluminum (not plastic) enclosures, constructed using field proven manufacturing processes that ensure survivability and precision targeting required for the most demanding battlefield environments. B.E. Meyers extensively tests the laser systems for ruggedness and bore sighting stability using extremes such as the demanding shock forces applied by the M2 (.50 caliber) HBMG, in addition to the lighter 7.62mm and 5.56mm automatic weapon systems. All of these products are ANSI Z136.1 compliant, waterproof to 66 feet sea water, and use commercially available portable battery sources.
