Asahi Kasei Corporation is the world's only manufacturer offering semiconductor laser diodes in the 260-290nm wavelength range. Sales of paid samples are scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2025.

Asahi Kasei Corporation has been engaged in collaborative research with Professor Hiroshi Amano's lab at Nagoya University, a Nobel Prize laureate, since 2017. By combining Asahi Kasei's proprietary AlN single-crystal substrate and thin-film growth technology with Nagoya University's expertise in blue laser diode development, we achieved the world's first continuous room-temperature oscillation of a deep ultraviolet laser diode in 2022. Until now, the shortest wavelength for commercially available semiconductor laser diodes was 375 nm, and in the deep ultraviolet range, only large, costly solid-state lasers were available. Our breakthrough enables the use of desired wavelengths in the 260-290 nm range with compact, low-cost devices. This advancement opens up various applications, including measurement instruments that were previously difficult to evaluate with LED light sources, more efficient sterilization equipment, and surface inspection devices.
